About ARC

We provide rehabilitation services for animals recovering from orthopaedic, neurological and painful conditions

Finding ARC

The Animal Rehabilitation Centre is a dedicated facility within Donaldson’s Vets Ltd Birchencliffe branch. Close to junction 24 of the M62 it offers easy access to patients (often travelling to us from several hours away) and has a car park reserved for clients only.

Our building has a modern waiting area with separate cat zone and ramp access and accessible bathroom facilities.

Our team of vets, nurses and receptionists are more than happy to welcome you and assist in every way (including helping pets in and out of vehicles) and are supported by wider administrative team including insurance claim personnel.

ARC provides rehabilitation services for companion animals recovering from orthopaedic, neurological and painful conditions including dogs, cats and rabbits (and occasionally other species by arrangement – please ask!)

Diagnosing at ARC

We like to gather as much helpful information as possible prior to your visit, including all clinical records and any radiographs or scans from your home veterinary practice and any other centre where your pet has been treated. We may ask you to complete a questionnaire in advance as well as to bring where possible some video footage of your pet showing their problem.

Patients are initially assessed by one of our rehabilitation veterinarians and a treatment plan is drawn up. This may involve a combination of prescribed exercises and physio therapy at home alongside hydrotherapy, laser, TENS or ultrasound treatments, acupuncture, massage, tissue mobilisation and myofascial release, hot or cold therapy, balance and proprioceptive training and stretching with our registered veterinary nurses and vets with regular reassessment with the vet who is in charge of your pet’s care.

We will provide you with a summary plan of your pet’s home care and demonstrate everything you need to do- it’s a good idea to try to bring everyone who is involved in your pet’s care to the appointment if you can and taking a video or recording of any exercises we are practising is a great reference!

We can offer advice on equipment to help your pet and stock some of the most common helpful items.
From ramps, harnesses and boots, there are many good and bad examples available on the wider market and internet and it’s wise to make sure any prospective purchase you are thinking of will be suitable for your pet.

Inpatient Care

Some pets (particularly those with serious neurological problems) need intensive treatment. We offer day patient stays where this is the most effective option for your pet and in conjunction with our veterinary hospital at Almondbury just three miles away we can provide inpatient hospital care too where necessary.

Rehabilitation patients require a veterinary referral from the animal’s home veterinary practice.
A referral form can be accessed here:

We also offer assessments for working dogs and canine athletes in many different jobs and sports

Aimed at identifying training needs and addressing performance issues. These services are for dogs without clinical problems and do not require veterinary referral; however if a clinical issue is found we will report on this to the patient’s home practice.
We like to gather information relevant to the patient’s assessment via different questionnaires in advance and footage of the dog’s performance is particularly useful.
